Ardesia Wine Bar

The design for Ardesia, a new wine bar located in the ground floor space of a high-end residential tower in Hell’s Kitchen, nods to both the modern language of the recent building, as well as the rich texture and patina of the surrounding context. Conceived by architects Mimi Madigan and Aki Ishida, the design offers the breadth of neighborhood residents an inviting and comfortable extension of home, and passers-through a distinctive alternative.

The Italian word for slate, Ardesia features its namesake slate slab flooring, custom character cherry millwork, hand blown glass fixtures, and a sublime marble bar top made of Paonazzo stone quarried from the canals of Venice. A two-story wall of wine accessed by a steel and glass structure evokes both the fire escape and theater catwalk intrinsic to the neighborhood’s identity, with the on-going retrieval of wine bottles a visible measure of consumption that adds to the dynamism of the space.
